Protect Your Home in Heavy Rain

Los Angeles may be known for sunshine, but when heavy rain hits, it can create real problems for homeowners. Preparing your property ahead of time helps prevent damage, leaks, and costly repairs. Here’s a practical guide to keeping your home safe when the weather turns wet.

Check Your Roof

Start at the top. Look for loose or damaged shingles, worn flashing, or areas that seem weakened from age. A quick inspection and a few small fixes now can save you from leaks later.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters can send water straight toward your walls and foundation. Clear out leaves and debris so water can flow freely. Make sure downspouts point away from your home.

Secure Windows and Doors

Check seals, weatherstripping, and frames to make sure they are tight and secure. Even a small gap can let in water during a heavy downpour.

Trim Trees and Shrubs

Branches that hang too close to your house can break during storms. Keep plants trimmed so they don’t scrape your roof or block your gutters.

Plant Strong Rooted Vegetation

Deep rooted plants help keep soil in place and reduce erosion around your property. This can improve how water drains during storms.

Ensure Proper Drainage

Walk around your yard after a light rain to see where water collects. Make adjustments so water flows away from your driveway, patio, and home foundation.

Inspect Drains and Sump Pumps

Check that yard drains, French drains, and sump pumps are working. A quick test run can prevent flooding when a storm arrives.

Consider Flood Insurance

Even if you’re not in a designated flood zone, strong storms can still cause water damage. Flood insurance offers peace of mind and can make recovery easier.

Stay Ready Before the Storm Hits

Taking a few simple steps now can help keep your home dry and protected when heavy rain rolls through Los Angeles. A little preparation goes a long way toward avoiding stress and unexpected repairs.
