From iconic local favorites to scenic Malibu trails, here are some of the best hiking spots around Los Angeles to add to your summer bucket list.

Runyon Canyon Park

One of LA's most popular hiking destinations, Runyon Canyon offers sweeping city views and convenient access near Hollywood. The trails range from moderate to challenging, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors.

You'll often find people hiking with their dogs, getting in a quick workout, or catching sunset views over the city. If you're looking for a classic Los Angeles hiking experience, Runyon Canyon is a great place to start.

Griffith Park

As one of the largest urban parks in North America, Griffith Park offers miles of trails and some of the most recognizable views in Los Angeles.

Many routes lead toward the Hollywood Sign or Griffith Observatory, making this area perfect for visitors and longtime residents alike. Whether you're looking for a casual walk or a longer hike, there's a trail for nearly every fitness level.

Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

Known to many locals as the Culver City Stairs, Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is less about distance and more about the challenge.

The steep staircase provides an intense cardio workout, while the top rewards hikers with panoramic views stretching across Los Angeles. For those looking for a shorter but more demanding outdoor activity, this is one of the best options on the Westside.

Wisdom Tree Trail

The Wisdom Tree Trail may be shorter than some of LA's other hikes, but it delivers one of the best rewards.

After a steady climb, hikers reach the famous lone tree overlooking the city. The panoramic views make this a favorite location for sunrise and sunset hikes, especially for those looking for a quick outdoor adventure without committing to a longer trail.

Solstice Canyon

For those looking for a more relaxed hiking experience, Solstice Canyon offers a unique combination of nature and history.

The trail features shaded paths, coastal air, small streams, and the remains of historic stone structures. Thanks to its proximity to the ocean, temperatures here often feel cooler than other hiking areas around Los Angeles.

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area

An underrated outdoor space with easier trails, open green areas, gardens, and wide views stretching across Los Angeles. It’s a calmer option compared to some of the busier hiking spots around the city.

Sandstone Peak

Located within the Santa Monica Mountains, Sandstone Peak is the highest point in the range and offers some of the most impressive views in Southern California.

Many hikers choose the Mishe Mokwa Loop, which winds through rock formations, shaded sections, and scenic overlooks. On clear days, you can see the Pacific Ocean, surrounding mountain ranges, and miles of coastline.

Escondido Falls

One of Malibu's most popular hiking destinations, Escondido Canyon Trail leads hikers through a scenic canyon toward a seasonal waterfall.

The trail is relatively accessible compared to many mountain hikes and offers a mix of creek crossings, canyon views, and natural scenery. Spring and early summer are often the best times to visit when water flow is at its peak.

One of the best things about living in Los Angeles is having access to such a wide variety of outdoor experiences. Whether you prefer coastal canyons, challenging stair climbs, mountain peaks, or iconic city views, there's a trail nearby worth exploring.
